The 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87 by Dmitri Shostokovich were written in a brisk five months during 1950-1951. The work was inspired by Shostakovich’s visit to the Bicentennial Bach Competition in Leipzig, where the composer heard Russian pianist Tatiana Nikolaeva perform Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier. As the story goes, Shostakovich began composing the Preludes and Fugues immediately following his return from Leipzig, and invited Nikolaeva, to whom this work was dedicated, to come and play a prelude and fugue that he had just written, After the session, Shostakovich asked Nikolaeva to return the next day, when another one of the set would be completed. The speed at which Shostakovich composed this music does not at all compromise the work ingenious intellect and complexity. Each Prelude and Fugue is an ocean of imager and narrative, with every single voice living out his own story: from pure yet encompassing, all-white key fugue in C major, to the convoluted and highly ornamental B-flat minor Prelude and Fugue, to the majestic and grandiose finale in D minor, its tumultuous climax akin to the composer’s greatest symphonic moments.
The 24 Preludes and Fugues have been named the 20th century’s equivalent of the Well-Tempered Clavier. Sadly, however, they are still not common among today’s standard repertoire lists. Perhaps in the 21st century this cycle will receive its much-deserved attention and recognition as one of the greatest works ever written for piano by a 20th –century Russian master.

Это скорее черновики, чем завершенная работа. Позднее в концертных исполнениях многое звучало по-другому. Мне стоило немалого труда уговорить пианиста на публикацию записей. Однако надеюсь, что любителям музыки Шостаковича они покажутся интересными.
